On September 23, the Axiom/Terabit report “Study on the Development of the Subsea Cable Market” was submitted to the Dutch Parliament.
This report, commissioned by the Ministerie van Economische Zaken, highlights the urgent need for at least two transatlantic cables, one cable connecting to Asia, and several interconnecting subsea cables with neighboring European countries. These are essential to meet the future demand for bandwidth and to maintain the Netherlands’ strong position as a digital hub.
The projected growth in bandwidth demand within the Dutch “catchment area” (the countries that heavily rely on the Netherlands for data transport) over the next 10 years is extraordinary. The study forecasts an increase from the current 900 Tbps of bandwidth to 25 Pbps by 2035. This represents an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35% over the next decade.
This immense growth, combined with the anticipated decommissioning of more than half of the subsea cables currently landing in the Netherlands (including the only transatlantic cable landing in the country), creates an urgent need for new investments in subsea cables.
The report underscores the vital importance of the mission of the Dutch Subsea Cable Coalition.
Are you curious about the current status of subsea cable landings in the Netherlands and the objectives of the Subsea Cable Coalition? On October 24 (2024), from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Central European Time), the Subsea Cable Coalition will host a webinar for interested parties from both the Netherlands and abroad.
